Historic District Infill

This elegant, award-winning building accommodates retail and office spaces in Aspen's historic downtown core. Fine masonry detailing on the street front recreates the craftsmanship of the early 1900s, while simpler, more contemporary detailing graces the elevated terrace on the upper level.

"Kandycom was very challenging because we had to deal with many difficult site conditions during construction. The building was designed to fit into a lot that was surrounded by historical structures. One side of the building faced the historic Brand Building which was over a hundred years old, and which had a stone foundation."

"One of the biggest challenges was to design and build a foundation and structural system of the new building that would not disturb the historic stone foundation of the adjacent 100-year-old Brand Building. That meant there could not be digging and/or any vibration of the ground while excavating for the new building, for fear that portions of the historic building may shift or move. The whole team, from Architect, Structural Engineer, Contractor, worked very well together and creatively to solve the problems that the site posed."
