The Residences at the Little Nell complex was designed to replace an entire downtown block of older, nondescript commercial and residential structures that were built over the entire period of Aspen's development as a destination resort. As an infill project in a high profile area, the complex needed to convey the elegance appropriate to a world-class resort, while still paying homage to the mining history of the site.

A new promenade will be created between the gondola and other areas of downtown, with shops and restaurants opening up onto the pedestrian area, enhancing the après-ski and retail experience for visitors and locals alike.

The massing of the project is broken down into four or five smaller buildings with low sloping shed roofs punctuated by a series of flat roofed elements. The palette of materials is taken from both the neighboring buildings and Aspen's rich history, and includes masonry, timber and weathered copper.
